10–15 November 2026 · Vila do Conde / Porto, Portugal
Maestro Luis Miguel Clemente & Orquestra da Costa Atlântica
Overview
The Atlantic Coast Conducting Masterclass & Competition is an intensive six-day programme for conductors who want to refine their technique, deepen their artistic identity and develop a more conscious, expressive and effective relationship with the orchestra.
Held in Vila do Conde, in the Porto region of Portugal, the masterclass is led by Maestro Luis Miguel Clemente, one of Portugal’s leading conductors and an internationally respected conducting pedagogue. A specialist in the phenomenology of Carlos Kleiber’s conducting gesture — the subject of his PhD thesis, completed cum laude — he guides participants beyond patterns and corrections, towards a deeper awareness of what their gesture actually communicates.
The masterclass offers a concentrated laboratory of gesture, sound and orchestral response. It combines substantial podium time, individual coaching, a focused and supportive working atmosphere, video analysis and a final public concert. Participants benefit from intensive daily sessions with two professional pianists and the Orquestra da Costa Atlântica, whose close involvement gives the masterclass its distinctive rehearsal-to-concert character.
The Atlantic Coast Conducting Masterclass & Competition is designed for conductors who are ready to look closely at what they do, what the orchestra receives, and how gesture can become clearer, more necessary and more musical. At its core, the programme is about leadership through listening: learning how to communicate intention, shape response and lead with greater awareness.

A different kind of podium time
Podium time matters. But it only becomes useful when it is observed, questioned and understood.
Throughout the masterclass, participants work at the podium, receive direct feedback, review their own gesture through video analysis and return to the ensemble with clearer musical intention. The aim is not to accumulate minutes, but to make each moment in front of the musicians more conscious, precise and effective.
Conduct. Listen. Reflect. Refine.
Led by Maestro Luis Miguel Clemente
Maestro Luis Miguel Clemente is Chief Conductor of the Orquestra da Costa Atlântica and Head of Studies of the OCA Conducting Academy. Alongside his work as a conductor, he has developed an international profile as a conducting pedagogue, mentoring conductors and advanced musicians in Europe, the Americas and Asia.
His teaching brings together practical orchestral experience, academic depth and a rare field of research: the phenomenology of Carlos Kleiber’s conducting gesture, the subject of his PhD thesis, completed cum laude. This perspective gives his work with conductors a distinctive focus on intention, perception, movement and sound.
With a background in Conducting, Musicology, Performing Arts and Ethnomusicology, and a deep knowledge of the Ilya Musin tradition, Maestro Clemente approaches conducting as both a technical discipline and a living form of musical communication. Technique is never treated as a mechanical code, but as a way of clarifying intention, shaping response and leading an orchestra with greater awareness.
In the masterclass, participants are not asked to imitate a model. They are challenged to look closely at their own physical language, to understand how it is received by the orchestra, and to develop a more confident, effective and authentic conducting voice — grounded in listening, artistic responsibility and leadership.
What participants will work on
Participants will work on the technical, musical and perceptive dimensions of conducting, including:
clarity, precision and economy of gesture;
preparation, ictus, releases and transitions;
the relationship between breath, timing and orchestral sound;
how musicians read and respond to physical information;
score analysis and interpretative decision-making;
rehearsal technique and spoken communication;
presence, authority and artistic leadership;
silence, anticipation and the expressive value of stillness.
The weekly process
The masterclass follows a progressive rehearsal-to-concert process. Participants begin by working with two professional pianists, where gesture, tempo, phrasing and rehearsal language can be examined in detail.
The work then expands to the orchestra. In front of the Orquestra da Costa Atlântica, each conductor experiences the immediate consequences of their choices: what becomes clear, what remains ambiguous, what changes the sound and what needs to be rethought.
The final public concert is the culmination of this process: a moment of artistic responsibility, focus and communication with musicians and audience.
The X Atlantic Coast Conducting Masterclass & Competition offers an exceptional opportunity for up to 10 Active Participants to engage in an intensive, high-level artistic experience, taking place over six inspiring days.
Designed for conductors aiming to deepen both technical skill and artistic insight, the masterclass features daily practical sessions with two professional pianists and the renowned Orquestra da Costa Atlântica.
At the heart of the program are individual coaching sessions, held directly in front of the orchestra and/or pianos, ensuring personalised feedback and focused development. These sessions are complemented by video analysis, group discussions, and individual mentorship with Maestro Clemente, creating a dynamic and immersive learning environment.
Participants will explore:
The phenomenology of conducting gesture
Rehearsal strategies and communication techniques
Analytical and interpretative approaches to the score
Artistic leadership and performance psychology
Maestro Luis Clemente offers in-depth mentoring tailored to each participant’s needs, helping refine the ability to communicate musical intention through gesture, shape artistic interpretation, and lead with clarity and confidence — all in a supportive, non-competitive setting.
The masterclass culminates in a public final concert at the magnificent Teatro Municipal de Vila do Conde, where each Active Participant will conduct the Orquestra da Costa Atlântica.
